Örömmel értesítünk, hogy a Golgota Gospel Kórus karácsonyi koncertet fog adni itt Szegeden, December 12-én délután 4-kor.A koncert az IH Rendezvényközpont Nagytermében lesz.

We’re blessed to announce that the Golgota Gospel Choir will be performing a Christmas concert here in Szeged on December 12^th at 4pm. The concert will be in the Nagy Terem of the IH Rendezvenykozpont.

Hisszük azt, hogy ez egy NAGYSZERŰ lehetőség arra, hogy a Karácsony üzenetét sokakhoz eljuttassuk itt, Szegeden.

We believe that this is a GREAT opportunity for the message of Christmas to go forth to many in Szeged.

Arra az esetre, ha esetleg valaki nem hallotta volna, szeretném egy tervezett törvényi változásra felhívni a figyelmeteket az egyházak jogállásval kapcsolatosan. Igyekszem tárgyszerű lenni, de már előre látom, hogy nem tudok majd maradéktalanul megfelelni saját elvárásomnak.

Tegnap (2010. szeptember 29.) látott napvilágot (http://videotar.mtv.hu/Videok/2010/09/29/08/Vege_az_egyhaz_biznisznek__szigoritana_a_kormany_az.aspx) az a tervezett törvényjavaslat, miszerint módosítanák az 1990. évi IV. törvényt (a lelkiismereti és vallásszabadságról, valamint az egyházakról) olymódon, hogy minden magyarországi egyházat újra kellene regisztrálni, de csak a 10 000 tagnál nagyobb, vagy a történelmi jellegű egyházak maradhatnának ezek után egyházak. Mivel a jelenlegi kormánykoaliciónak kétharmados többsége van, a minősített többséget igénylő törvényeket is (így az egyházakról szóló törvényt is) meg tudják úgy változtatni ahogy az nekik (és a támogatóiknak) leginkább megfelel.

A hívek SZJA 1% felajánlásait alapul véve hat-hét jelenlegi magyarországi egyház maradhatna egyház a jövőben. Csak zárójelben jegyzem meg, hogy az APEH által közzétett SZJA 1% felajánlások alapján a Golgota Keresztény Gyülekezet tizenkilencedik a magyarországi egyházak listáján, 1253 felajánlással (teljes lista itt: http://www.apeh.hu/szja1_1/kimutat/2010_rend_egyh_kiem.html)

Történelmisége okán még további egyházak is megtarthatnák egyházi státuszukat, de a Golgota Keresztény Gyülekezet valószínűleg (ez alapján) nem. Mindez komoly következményekkel járhat (a teljesség igénye nélkül):

A gyülekezetekben szolgáló külföldiek és a Vajtán tanulók magyarországi tartózkodását nagyban megnehezítené a változás, hiszen egyházi alkalmazottaknak jelenleg nem kell munkavállalási engedélyt beszerezniük, tehát ez mindenképpen megváltozna.
A gyülekezet nem lehetne intézményi fenntartó, tehát nem alapíthatna iskolákat, óvodákat és egyéb intézményeket, ugyanakkor félő hogy a vajtai Golgota Teológiai Főiskola helyzete is ellehetetlenedne, mert a fenntartója többé nem lenne egyház, tehát akár az akkreditációját is elveszítené.
A gyülekezet nem kaphatna SZJA 1% felajánlásokat és egyházi kiegészítő támogatásokat sem.

A tavalyi adózási adatok alapján az állam közel 353 millió forintot takarítana meg évente (azaz 35 forintot állampolgáronként egy évben) azzal, hogy megvonná a kisebb gyülekezetek egyházi státuszát, miközben a legnagyobbaknak összesen 4 milliárd 850 millió forintot fizetett ki (ebből a Magyar Katolikus Egyház 3 milliárdot, a Magyarországi Református Egyház pedig 1 milliárdot kapott).

Talán a legfontosabb az, hogy sajnos mindezek alapján elindulni látszik egy folyamat, amikor felülről megmondják, hogy kik azok (mely szerveződések), akik alkalmasak arra, hogy a társadalom tagjai felé erkölcsi - és egyéb - módon iránymutatásul, példaként szolgálhatnak. A jövőben akkor, amikor Isten igéjét a mi meggyőződésünk szerint hirdetjük, akkor az állam (tehát a többségi társadalom) szerint az nem tekinthető majd vallási tevékenységnek. Tehát ha a jövőben a Golgota Keresztény Gyülekezetbe járok, akkor a társadalom szemében nem leszek keresztény, ami teljes egészében a Magyar Katolikus Egyház véleményét tükrözi (lista itt: http://www.lmrkat.hu/szektak.html) és nem részesülhetek majd a vallás- és lelkiismereti szabadság által nyújtott védelemben.

In the event that someone haven't heard yet, I want to draw your attention to a proposed change regarding the status of churches in Hungary. I will try to be objective, but I foresee that I won't be able to fully meet my own expectations.

A new proposal was revealed yesterday (September 29, 2010) to alter Act IV. of 1990. regarding the freedom of conscience, religion, and churches (http://videotar.mtv.hu/Videok/2010/09/29/08/Vege_az_egyhaz_biznisznek__szigoritana_a_kormany_az.aspx). The government will basically ask every church to re-register, but only churches who have more than 10,000 members or those that are historical churches will be allowed to remain churches. Since the current government coalition has two-thirds majority they are able to change even laws that require a qualified majority, so basically they can change things the way it suits their (and their supporters' ) best interest.

Based on personal income tax donations, currently there are 6 to 7 churches in Hungary that could still remain churches. Calvary Chapel is the nineteenth on the list with 1,253 individuals who made donations (the full list is here:http://www.apeh.hu/szja1_1/kimutat/2010_rend_egyh_kiem.html).

On account of their historicity some more churches will be able to retain their status as a church, but unless something changes, Calvary Chapel will not be able to continue as a church. This can have some serious consequences (the list is not exhaustive):
Foreigners serving in the churches and students will have a much harder time receiving visas.
If Calvary Chapel isn't going to be a church, it will not be able to offer any kind of education (accredited or not), kindergartens and elementary schools included.
The congregation will not be able to offer donations under the present tax-deductible system.
Based on last year's tax data, the state would save 353 million forints in a year (or 35 forints per citizen annually) if they deny giving the status of a church to smaller congregations. All the while a total of almost 5 billion forints were paid out to the largest churches (the Hungarian Catholic Church received 3 billion forints, the Reformed Church of Hungary received 1 billion forints).
All these seem to point in the same direction, namely that someone will be appointed to declare who (which organizations) is capable of declaring moral and other guidelines / teaching, who is able to guide spiritually, or serve as an example. In the future, when preaching the Word of God as we understand it, the state (that is, the majority of society) will not regard that as a religious activity. So in the future when I go to Calvary Chapel I will not be considered a Christian in the eyes of the society, which is already the opinion of the Hungarian Catholic Church (http://www.lmrkat.hu/szektak.html), meaning that I will not be protected by the freedoms given to me currently on account of freedom of conscience and religion.

Néhány héttel ezelőtt befejeztük Jakab levelét. Utolsó alkalommal Jakab gyülekezetnek szóló bátorítását néztük meg arról, hogy keressék meg azokat, akik eltávolodtak az igazságtól. Mindig szomorú, ha az emberek eltávolodnak az igazságtól. De ha ez történik, nem szabad őket egyszerűen csak elengedni és az „Úrra bízni” őket. Jakab arra bátorít, hogy szeretettel keressük meg őket, hogy láthassuk ahogy helyreáll az Istennel és az Ő gyülekezetével való közösségük.

A couple of weeks ago, we finished the book of James. In our last study, we looked at James’ encouragement to the church to pursue those who have wandered from the truth.

It’s always a sad thing when people wander from the truth. But when people wander, we shouldn’t just let them go & “trust the Lord” for them, James encourages to lovingly pursue them that we might see them restored to fellowship with God & His church.

Az évek alatt itt, a szegedi Golgotában sok embert láttunk bejönni az ajtón. Hálásak vagyunk azokért, akik azért menetek el, mert más városban, vagy országban szolgálják Jézust. De sajnos sok olyan embert is láttunk, akik más okok miatt mentek el.
Over the years here at Golgota Szeged, we’ve seen many people come through our doors. We praise God for those that have gone on to serve Jesus in another city or country. But sadly we’ve also seen a lot of people leave for other reasons.
Sok oka lehet annak, ha valaki elhagyja a hívők közösségét. Mi a szegedi Golgotában hisszük, hogy két indokolt esetben lehet elhagyni egy gyülekezetet. Ha egy el nem rendezett bűn van a gyülekezetben, vagy ha nem Biblikus a tanítás. Sajnos a legtöbb ember azért hagyja el a gyülekezeteket, mert valaki megbántja őket, vagy mert nem úgy mennek a dolgok, ahogy ők szeretnék. Lehet, hogy egy későbbi bejegyzés során ezekről is fogok írni. De visszatérve erre a gondolatmenetre; hiszem azt, hogy mi, gyülekezetként elbuktunk abban, hogy nem mentünk utána azoknak, akik elmentek. Hagytuk, hagy menjen tovább az életünk anélkül, hogy különösebben törődtünk volna azokkal, akik nem voltak már közöttünk. Ez a „nem tudom, nem fáj” -féle bűn, az hogy nem törődünk másokkal.

There a many reasons why someone might leave a fellowship of believers. We at Golgota Szeged, believe two valid reasons for leaving a church would be sin that is not dealt with in the life of the church or if the church were teaching doctrine that isn’t Biblical. Sadly most people leave churches because someone else in the church hurt them or the church isn’t doing things the way they want. Maybe in a future post we will deal with those points. But for the discussion here, we as a church, I believe, have failed to pursue those who have left. We have allowed our lives to go on with little or no concern for those who are no longer around. It’s the “out of sight, out of mind” sin of not caring for people.

Azt gondolom, hogy nagyon sok ember rendezni akarja az életét Istennel és vissza akar térni az Isten népével való közösségbe, de zavarban vannak és szégyenlik magukat azt gondolván, hogy mi, akik itt maradtunk a közösségben haragszunk rájuk, vagy dühösek vagyunk. Azt nem tudom, hogy ki hogy érzi magát azzal kapcsolatban, amiért elment, de azt elmondhatom, hogy nem haragszunk, vagy nem vagyunk dühösek senkire.

I think many people want get their lives right with God & get back into fellowship with God’s people, but they feel embarrassed & ashamed & think that we who stayed in fellowship are mad or upset with them. How a person feels about why they wandered, I don’t know, but I can say that we are not upset or mad with people.

Tudjuk és hisszük, hogy Isten szeretet (1 János 4,8). És ha megvizsgáljuk Isten szeretetét a Bibliában, azt láthatjuk, hogy Isten utánamegy az embereknek. Ha azt állítjuk, hogy szeretjük Istent és hogy Isten szeretete van bennünk, akkor nekünk is utána kell mennünk az embereknek.

We believe & know that God is love (1 John 4:8). And when you examine the love of God in the Bible you see that God’s love is active in pursuit of people. If we claim to love God & have His love in us, then we should be active in our pursuit of people as well.

Hagy bátorítsalak arra, hogy először emlékezz vissza, hogy Isten hogyan ment utánad! Eléggé szeretett ahhoz, lejöjjön a Mennyből és emberként egy olyan életet éljen, amit mi nem tudtunk volna, meghaljon helyettünk és egy olyan ajándékot adjon, amit mi ne érdemeltünk meg.

So let me encourage you to think first about how God pursued you! He loved you enough to step out of Heaven and come as a man to live the life we could not live, to die the death we should have died, to give us the gift we cannot earn.

Most szánj egy percet arra, hogy gondolj azokra az emberekre, akikre emlékszel, hogy régebben a közösségben voltak, de már nincsenek itt. Kik azok az emberek? Mi van velük? Nem tudod? Lehet, hogy ma van az a nap, amikor fel kell venned a telefont és felhívni valakit és csak megkérdezni, hogy hogy van. Lehet, hogy ma van az a nap, amikor újjá kell építeni a felégetett hidakat.

Now take a minute & think about people you know who were once in fellowship but now aren’t. Who are they? What’s going on in their lives? Don’t know? Maybe today is the day you need to pick up the phone & call someone, just to see how they are doing. Maybe today is the day to start to rebuild bridges that have been burned.

Isten szeret bennünket és utánunk jön. Hívőkként része az elhívásunknak az is, hogy mi is utána menjünk azoknak, akik valamilyen oknál fogva elhagyták a közösséget.

God loves & pursues us. Part of our calling as believers is to love & pursue those who, for one reason or another, have left fellowship.

Befejezésképpen tehát arra bátorítalak, hogy keresd meg azokat, akik nincsenek már benne a közösségben és menj utánuk szeretetben, mert ha te volnál ilyen helyzetben, nem örülnél, ha valaki te utánad menne?

So in closing, let me encourage you to reach out & pursue, in love, those who aren’t in fellowship any more because if you were out of fellowship for a while, wouldn’t you want someone to pursue you?

egy szó a pénzről / a word about money

Ami Isten tiszteletét illeti, sok embernek ebben a legnehezebb a pénz területe. Azt gondoljuk, hogy a hitünk és a pénz két különálló dolog. Megdolgozunk a pénzünkért és hiszünk Istenben. A Biblia azt tanítja, hogy minden Istené, mi egyszerűen csak az Ő vagyonának sáfárai vagyunk. Ez az első alapelv, amit meg kell értenünk a pénzzel kapcsolatban: nem a miénk, hanem Istené, mi sáfárok vagyunk.

When it comes to honoring God, one of the hardest areas for many people is their money. We think that money & our faith are two separate things. We earn our money & we believe in God. The Bible teaches that everything belongs to God, we are simply stewards of His riches. This is the first fundamental principle we need to understand about money, it’s not ours, it’s God’s, we are stewards.

Jézus sok példázatában használta a pénzt, mint illusztrációt és azt, hogy legyünk annak hű sáfárai. Túl gyakran „elszellemieskedjük” ezeket a részeket és azokra a „nem látható” dolgokra vonatkoztatjuk ezeket, amiket Isten nekünk adott (t.i. ajándékok, képességek). Bár az igaz, hogy az ajándékainknak is sáfárai vagyunk, de azt gondolom, hogy Jézus azt akarta, hogy megértsük a fontosságát annak, hogy jó sáfárai legyünk a pénznek, amit Isten ránk bízott.

In many of His parables Jesus used the illustration of money & being a faithful steward of it. Too often we spiritualize these passages & talk about the “unseen” things that God has given us (i.e. gifts, abilities). Though it is true we are to steward our gifts, I think Jesus wanted us to understand the importance of being good stewards of the money that God entrusts to us.

A Biblia tele van bölcsességgel azzal kapcsolatban, hogy hogyan bánjunk bölcsen azzal a pénzzel, amit Isten ránk bízott. Nézzünk meg néhány ilyen alapelvet. Azt remélem, hogy ez segít abban, hogy jobban tiszteld Istent a pénz területén.

The Bible is packed full of wisdom for us about how to be wise with the money God gives us. Let’s look at some of these principles. It’s my hope that these will help you honor God better with money.

1. Tiszteld meg Istent az első zsengével.Példabeszédek 3:9-10. Ez azt jelenti, hogy az elsőt, a legjobbat add Istennek. Nem akarok dogmatikus lenni abban, hogy mennyit adj. A 2 Korinthus 8 és 9 arról tanít, hogy legyünk nagylelkű adakozók. Ez minden ember életében másként néz ki. Hogy ha nem tiszteled Istent azzal, hogy anyagilag is részt veszel a munkájában, akkor a Malakiás 3 szerint meglopod Istent. Ha téged meglopna valaki, aztán meg pénzt kérne tőled, adnál neki?

1. Honoring God with the firstfruits. Proverbs 3:9-10. This means giving God the first & the best. I don’t don’t want to be dogmatic on how much to give. 2 Corinthians 8 & 9 teaches us to be generous givers. This looks different for every person. If you’re not honoring God by financially taking part in His work, then Malachi 3 says that you’re robbing from God. If someone was stealing from you, would you give them money if they asked?
I believe that the giving of firstfruits should be given to the church. Anything above and beyond that is up to you as you’re led by the Holy Spirit.
Do I honor God with my gross or net salary? The question I ask you is which one do you want God to bless?

2. Bölcs dolog, ha van pénzügyi terved. Példabeszédek 21:5Költségvetést készíteni nem is olyan nehéz, mint ahogy hangzik. Egy listát kell készíteni a bevételekről és a kiadásokról. Az a jó, ha kevesebb kiadásod van, mint bevételed, különben hamar bajba kerülsz. Ami igazán nehéz a költségvetésben, az az, hogy tartani kell magunkat hozzá. 2. It’s wise to have a financial plan! Proverbs 21:5. Making a budget isn’t as hard as it sounds. It’s making a list of income & expenses. It’s good if your expenses are less than your income, otherwise you’ll be in trouble, fast! What’s hard about a budget is sticking to it. If you need help creating a budget just send an e-mail to info@golgotaszeged.hu & we’ll help you.

3. Rakj félre a nehéz napokra. Példabeszédek 30:25Sajnos a legtöbb embernek nincs megtakarított pénze. Szakértők azt mondják, hogy jó, ha az embernek van 4-6 hónapnyi megtakarítása a váratlan helyzetekre. Senki nem tud ennyi pénzt megspórolni egy nap alatt. Ez csak apránként megy. Jó ötlet, hogy amikor megkapod a fizetésedet, akkor ebből megtiszteled Istent (mondjuk 10%-kal), félre raksz 10%-ot, és befektetsz 10%-ot (erről még később beszélünk). Szépen lassan össze tudsz gyűjteni bizonyos megtakarításokat, így nem kell adósságba keveredned.
Ma van a legjobb alkalom, hogy elkezdj félrerakni! Tehát, kezdj el félrerakni, és ne nyúlj a megtakarításokhoz.

3. Save for a rainy day. Proverbs 30:25. Sadly most people today have no money saved. Experts say it’s good to have 4-6 months of living expenses saved in the event that something happens. No one can save that much money overnight. It happens a little at a time. It’s a good idea, when you get your salary, to honor God (for example with 10%), save 10%, and invest 10% (we’ll talk more about that later). Over time you will be able to accumulate savings so you don’t have to go into debt.
There is no better time to start saving than today! So start saving money & don’t touch your savings!

4. Gondold át a kiadásaidat. Példabeszédek 22:7Manapság nagyon könnyű hitelhez jutni, de azzal együtt ez egy nagyon veszélyes dolog. Most, hogy ezt írom, én is küzdök egy svájci frank alapú autóhitellel, amelynek havi törlesztőrészlete 30%-kal ment fel az elmúlt 3 évben. Régebben mindig azt mondták, hogy jobb spórolni valamire és aztán megvenni, mint hitelre venni és aztán fizetni. Ha nem akarsz a hitel csapdájába kerülni, tegyél félre valamire és csak aztán vedd meg.
Ha neked is van hiteled, mint nekem, legyen az autó hitel, vagy személyi kölcsön (azt gondolom, hogy a lakáshitel az egy „jó” hitel, mert az otthonod, sok más dologgal ellentétben, megőrzi az értékét), azt javaslom, hogy fizesd ki amilyen gyorsan csak tudod, és ha egyszer már kint vagy az adósságból, ne is keveredj bele újra. Ez lehet, hogy azt fogja jelenteni, hogy másokkal ellentétben a cuccaid nem a legújabbak lesznek, de az érme másik oldala pedig az, hogy neked pedig olyan szabadságod van, ami nekik nincs.

4. Consider your expenses. Proverbs 22:7. Today credit is very easy to get but at the same time very dangerous to have. As I write this, I’m struggling with a car loan that is based in CHF and my monthly payment has gone up 30% in over the course of 3 years. People have always said it’s better to save up and buy something rather than buy it on credit & pay it off. If you want freedom from credit, save up for something then buy it.
If you, like me, have credit, be it a car loan or credit card (I believe a home loan is a “good” kind of credit because your home will keep value not lose it like so many other things), my advice is to pay it off as soon as you can & once you’re out of debt, commit to staying out of debt. That may mean you don’t have all the newest things everyone else has but on the flipside you’ll have a freedom in life that they won’t.

5. Légy nagylelkű. Példabeszédek 11:24-25Isten egy nagylelkű Isten, és ha követjük Őt, akkor nekünk is nagylelkűnek kell lennünk. A nagylelkűség bármiben megnyilvánulhat, akár abban, hogy segítesz egy szükséget szenvedő embernek, vagy egyszerűen abban is, hogy megnyitod az otthonodat és megvendégelsz embereket.
Mivel a legtöbbünk korlátozott anyagi körülmények között él, a nagylelkűség csak akkor lehetséges, ha tervezünk és költségvetést készítünk ezzel kapcsolatban.

5. Be generous. Proverbs 11:24-25. God is a generous God & to follow Him means we’re to be generous too. Generosity means everything to helping someone out with a need they have to simply opening your home to people, showing hospitality & feeding them.
Because many of us live on limited finances, generosity will only be possible if we plan & budget for it.

6. Gondolj a jövőre. Példabeszédek 13:11Sokszor csak azon gondolkodunk, hogy hogyan éljük túl ezt a hónapot, és eszünkbe se jut, hogy mi lesz 10, 15, 20 év múlva. Ha azt reméled, hogy a kormány gondoskodni fog rólad, ha majd öreg leszel, felejtsd el. Isten sosem mondta, hogy a szociális ellátórendszertől várjuk a segítséget, Isten bölcsessége az, hogy gondolkodj előre, és te gondoskodj a jövődről.
Olyan hosszú távú befektetéseket kell csinálnod tehát, amelyek 15-30 év múlva járnak le.

6. Think about the future. Proverbs 13:11. Many times we are only thinking about getting through the month with no thought to 10, 15, 20 years down the road. If you’re hoping that the government will take care of you when you’re old, stop hoping. God never told us to look to the social welfare systems for help, God’s wisdom is for people to think ahead & provide for their future.

this year we have begun what we would to call the "Saint Nicholas Project". The real Saint Nicholas was a devout Christian man who lived in the 3rd & 4th century and was known for leaving gifts in for children and having great compassion on the sick, suffering and those in need. during this Christmas season we at Calvary Szeged want to do what we can to bring joy to people's lives. This year our first opportunity to bring joy will take us to an institution here in town that cares for 60 children, all with some mental handicap. if you would to make a small Christmas package (crayons, paper, coloring book, etc) please bring it to church by December 13th. we hope to spread some joy and point people to the Babe of Bethlehem this Christmas.

Ebben az évben elkezdünk egy olyan dolgot, amit úgy hívunk, hogy: "Szent Miklós Projekt". Az igazi Szent Miklós egy hívő keresztény ember volt, aki a 3-4. században élt, és arról volt ismert, hogy ajándékokat adott a gyerekeknek, és törődött a betegekkel, szenvedőkkel és azokkal, akik szükséget szenvedtek. A karácsonyi időszak alatt mi, a szegedi Golgota Gyülekezet olyan dolgot szeretnénk tenni, amivel örömet tudunk hozni az emberek életébe. Ebben az évben lehetőségünk nyílt, hogy örömet hozzunk 60 gyermek életébe, akik egy fogyatékosokat gondozó intézetben élnek. Hogyha szeretnél készíteni egy kis karácsonyi ajándékcsomagot (zsírkréta, papír, kifestő könyv stb.), hozzátok el december 13-án a gyülekezetbe. Reméljük, örömet tudunk hozni az emberek életébe idén Karácsonykor és meg tudjuk mutatni a betlehemi kisgyermeket.

yesterday I got a response from the mayor about our request for facilities to operate social services (soup kitchen & 2 pre-schools) in Szeged. the response was "at this time we don't have any buildings that meet the health board requirements". it was a little discouraging, but I guess this just means that we have to think a little "longer term" (maybe doing these things in 2011??). our rental agreement for the church is up in December 2010, so maybe we'll look to move to a different facility where we can have "multi-use" capabilities. please continue to pray with us about how we can be effective for the Kingdom of God here in Szeged.

Balázs jott velem. nagyon orultunk a talalkozasert mert ugy lattunk hogy a szegedi onkormanyzat komolyan vettunk a levelemet es a vagyunkat. diohejba a varos "tamogatna" mikent a bolcsi inditasaban es egy ingyen konyha a hajlektalanoknak, mert regen a ferencesek csinaltak etel a hajlektalanoknak de azt megszunt egy mi tudnak azt potolni. a bolcsiknek keresnek helyeket es 1 het mulva vissza szolnak hogy mit talaltak. kedd este az en "kapcsolat ember" az onkormanyzatnal hivott es mondta amikor megmutatta a levelemet az alpolgarmesternek aki a varos fejlestesert felelos, azt mondta hogy "felcsillant a szeme". ezek mind nagyon jol hirek, es lattunk hogy Isten vezet ebben. most mi lesz nem tudom de latom Isten ebbe. imadkozzunk tovabb ezekert.

as I posted I was called an invited to a meeting with one of the deputy mayors of Szeged in regards to the church's desire to open 2 pre-schools and a soup kitchen for the homeless. what really surprised me (oh me of little faith) is that they took my letter and our desire seriously. so, today I, and Balázs, one of the elders from the church who is a lawyer, went to the mayor's office & we met with the deputy mayor and the head of the social services office. they were prepared and knew who "Golgota" (Calvary Chapel) was. after them asking me some questions about Calvary here in Hungary and the church in Szeged they asked about why we want to do these things. I told them that as we look at the life of Jesus, He reached out to people on a real, physical level and met their needs, which opened their hearts to hear the spiritual message. I told them that it is our desire to meet the needs that are obvious in our city. the head of the social services was open to us from the get go and by the end of our meeting the deputy mayor was also open to us operating social services. when he asked what we want from the city I told him we need facilities. we will be able to get the money to operate these "ministries" from the central budget but we need places to operate. he said that they will look for places for us and get back to me in a week. so we left very excited and hopeful.

when I got home our "contact" in the mayor's office called me. he told me that he laid the ground work for the meeting by giving the deputy mayor a lot of info about our church. he showed our letter to his boss, the deputy mayor in charge of city development and said that after he read the letter there was a "sparkle in his eye" that we want to do this. and because of this we were given audience today. our contact told me that the request for facilities would land on his desk in a couple of days & that now he would be able to finish a study that the city commissioned this summer about were new pre-schools need to be operated. he said that the city stopped this inquiry for some reason but now with us wanting to open two pre-schools, his boss would reopen this inquiry.

needless to say, I am in awe of what is going on. when I think about this rationally, we're a small church, with not much experience in things like this, with little money. but I know that we've got a big God on our side and we've got a heart to reach out and meet needs here in Szeged. so if this thing happens all I can say is, "all glory be to God."

We’d like to start this “school year” with a church lunch here at the church on September 6th after Sunday morning service. It’ll be free, so we hope to see you there.
